A DROP OF WATER
Orissa POST
|October 16, 2025
Water is also known as life.
To understand its significance, we can look at the “Rule of Threes.” According to this rule, a person needs three essential elements to survive: air (oxygen) for three minutes, water for three days, and food for more than three weeks. If one is deprived of any of these for longer than the specified time, their life is in danger. The three days mentioned for water refer to drinking water. This limit can vary slightly depending on an individual’s environment and health. A study by Dr. Claude Piantadosi of Duke University in North Carolina concluded that this time limit can be extended to one hundred hours in certain cases. Since food also contains water, it can sometimes compensate for the lack of water. Without both food and water, an 18-year-old boy from Austria survived for 18 days before he died. This is a world record.
