9 held for torture of two Dalit men

Cong forms probe panel; BJD warns of stir

Two days after a group of alleged cow vigilantes tonsured the heads of two Dalit men and forced them to crawl on their knees over an alleged cattle-smuggling dispute at Kharigumma village under Dharakote police limits in Ganjam district, police Tuesday claimed to have arrested nine of them, including a minor.

According to police, Sunday the two victims were intercepted by a group of people at Kharigumma village while transporting three cows from Haripur to Singipur as part of a dowry settlement. After stopping the vehicle, the mob allegedly accused them of cattle smuggling and demanded money. On their refusal to pay, they were assaulted by the mob.
