'Violence and an animal' claim was ignored

Police have been told they should have spoken to a woman who believed Valdo Calocane had been involved in an incident involving “violence and an animal” years before his attacks.A senior officer says he was not sure the woman's evidence would have added “any more value” to the investigation into Calocane.

Initial evidence about Calocane's time living in Wales was presented to the Nottingham Inquiry on Wednesday.

The inquiry was told that someone who lived with Calocane in shared accommodation while attending Pembrokeshire College, where she believed Calocane was a cleaner, contacted Nottinghamshire Police after the June 13 attacks.

The woman believed Calocane had a history of mental illness dating back to 2013 and described an incident involving “violence and an animal”.

Nottinghamshire Police never questioned her and a police log said this was because she lived in Wales.

Shallow, Mr Moloney said: “What she’s recorded there is not ‘they're going to publish things which will prejudice the investigation, she’s recorded that they want to run an inaccurate story on the warrant case.

“What would cause serious reputational damage to the organisation and undermine public confidence in policing is that a warrant for his arrest was not executed for nine months after it was issued.”

Mr Sanders said: “Yes, but we knew about that and that was what we tried to communicate to the families.”

Mr Moloney said: “What would cause serious reputational damage to the organisation and undermine public confidence in local policing is the number of dealings there had been with VC prior to his offences on June 13.”

“I’m not disputing that at all”, Mr Sanders said.
