IN the Christian tradition the Season of Advent begins this weekend and lasts for around four weeks. It's a time of spiritual preparation leading up to the celebration of Christmas, the birth of Jesus, and so it's very much a season of hope.

The Advent wreath, usually displayed in a prominent position in churches and which can also find a fitting place in the homes of Christian families, gives expression to the Church's hope and sense of longing as it progresses through the weeks of Advent to the joy of Christmas.
