No life left in crematorium incinerators
Nottingham Post
|October 15, 2025
A COUNCILLOR says lessons should be learned to prevent another "last-minute" scramble to replace costly incinerators at a council-run crematorium in the future.
-
Nottingham City Council currently operates and maintains gas-fired cremators at Wilford Hill Crematorium, which carries out around 1,200 cremations every year.
The authority says its 28-year-old cremators, which are eight years past their operational lifespan, are now at risk of failing.
The old cremators will also become completely defunct by 2027 when new regulations come in, meaning the service would have to cease if they were not replaced by this time. However, a plan to replace the cremators, at a cost of £1.3m, was approved at a meeting yesterday.
