New leader tight-lipped on local government shake-up

REFORM UK's new Nottinghamshire County Council leader says he will not yet divulge his opinion on plans for the biggest shake-up to local government in 50 years.

Under the plans, Mick Barton could end up being the last-ever county council leader, with the authority possibly being dissolved.
The government is abolishing councils throughout the county as part of a reorganisation. New councils are set to be created in the place of Nottinghamshire's nine authorities.
Options could include an expanded council covering Nottingham and surrounding areas.
Leaders of all councils have been meeting regularly since the plans came out last December and, following the May 1 county council election, Councillor Barton will be in those talks rather than his Conservative predecessor, Sam Smith.
