THE site of a Nottinghamshire coal-fired power station demolished over a decade ago is creating energy once again.

- By OLIVER PRIDMORE

The government has confirmed that the pioneering project at the former High Marnham Power Station is set to become fully operational from October to produce nearly 10 megawatts of electricity.

Work is already well under way at the site and the hydrogen produced there was crucial in powering the third series of the Netflix period drama, with the streaming giant having used High Marnham’s power on several of its productions.

The government is supporting 10 commercial-scale hydrogen projects across the UK, which are collectively set to create more than 700 jobs.

High Marnham was in the trio of coal-fired sites in Bassetlaw, created in the 1960s, forming part of the ‘Megawatt Valley’ that generated a quarter of the country’s electricity need at their peak. It was decommissioned in 2003 and its cooling towers were blown up in 2012.
