SIR Cameron Mackintosh's bold decision to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the world's favourite musical by letting amateurs nationwide have their turn, looks to be an inspired choice.
Having seen several productions of Les Miserables from the original days of Colm Wilkinson's embattled hero Jean Valjean through to Alfie Boe, I know what to expect - but this amateur version took me by surprise.
I didn't expect it to be so good.
In fact, I didn't think an amateur company taking on this huge project could be so breathtakingly impressive.
