NOTTINGHAM FOREST must wait a little longer to find out what European competition they will be playing in next season.

But the Reds' hopes of being promoted from the UEFA Conference League to the Europa League could well have been given a boost after Lyon yesterday won their appeal against being relegated to the French second division.

This decision puts Crystal Palace's participation in the Europa League next season in major doubt.

American businessman John Textor has financial interests in both Lyon and the Eagles, who qualified for the competition having won the FA Cup last season, putting both club's in breach of UEFA's multi-club ownership rules.

Textor is actively looking to sell his stake in Palace to help end any uncertainty and keep the club in the Europa League.

For a time, however, it looked like Palace would have no issues after the French football authorities decided to expel Lyon to Ligue 2 due to ongoing financial irregularities and estimated debts of €175m.
