Firefighters to remain for days at bale inferno

FIREFIGHTERS have been battling a huge blaze at a former RAF base in Nottinghamshire, in which 12,000 tonnes of hay bales and standing corn caught alight.

Ten crews were in attendance at the peak of the fire at Wigsley Old Airfield, near Tuxford, which was initially reported at 12.31am yesterday.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service (NFRS) said firefighters remained at the scene yesterday morning and were not expected to extinguish the blaze “anytime soon”.
