FOR the last month, my little sister has been staying with me. I say 'little' - she's 24 years old (how?!). Today, though, I'll be coming home to a quiet house, and an eerily quieter mind.

No background hum of worry about whether she's okay. No constant mental load anxiety about whether people were kind, whether she noticed my exasperated tone that morning, whether I'd left accessible food with clear instructions.

It's a strange emptiness — a blend of relief and guilt. You see, my sister is severely sight impaired, and facing a life with the triple challenge of being Black, a woman and disabled.
