STUDENTS WILL GRADUATE POSTHUMOUSLY

- By JOEL MOORE

Degree tribute for Grace and Barnaby

BARNABY Webber and Grace O’Malley-Kumar, who were killed in the Nottingham attacks, will receive posthumous university degrees this summer.

The 19-year-old University of Nottingham students were killed along with school caretaker Ian Coates, 65, in a series of horrifying attacks by Valdo Calocane in the early hours of June 13, 2023.

The university confirmed both Barnaby and Grace will receive the degrees at its summer graduation ceremonies in July, something their family members described as “absolutely heart-breaking” to think about. Barnaby, from Taunton in Somerset, was due to graduate with honours in history this summer, while Grace, from Woodford Green in east London, was due to receive a bachelor of medical science. She will receive a full posthumous medical degree in 2027, when she was due to graduate.

Grace’s parents, Sanjoy Kumar and Sinead O’Malley, said the emotional toll would make it too difficult to attend the ceremony.
