DEFENCE SECRETARY WANTS TO SEE DECISION ON POTENTIAL HOMES SITE

THE Defence Secretary says the final decision on when a historic Nottinghamshire Army barracks will close should be announced within months amid plans for thousands of new homes.
A huge development is planned on the currently operational Chetwynd Barracks and a neighbouring Toton site as part of a masterplan that leading figures hope will be an example for large-scale developments across the country.
The site was originally set to close in 2024, but the Ministry of Defence (MoD) then pushed this back to 2026.
It was then recently announced that the MoD had partnered with government agency Homes England to partially release land around the barracks for 1,300 homes.
The decision is part of a government scheme to build over 100,000 homes on surplus defence land in the coming years.
Defence Secretary John Healey visited Nottinghamshire on Tuesday to mark the launch of the government's free breakfast club programme.
