Crematorium had to run 24 hours a day at the height of pandemic

A NOTTINGHAMSHIRE council leader has described the moment he had to keep a crematorium running 24/7 at the worst point of the coronavirus pandemic.

Jason Zadrozny, Ashfield District Council's leader, even says the authority's former chief executive had to be trained to work in the crematorium at one point due to the extra staff required.

Five years on from the first coronavirus restrictions being introduced, councils across Nottinghamshire have been reflecting on the vital work they were tasked with during that time.

Local authorities played a crucial role in distributing many of the grants that kept businesses and households afloat, as well as playing a key part in communicating the latest guidance and rules.

One of the many services Ashfield District Council had responsibility for during that time was managing a crematorium.

The Mansfield and District Crematorium is run by a joint committee which includes Ashfield and two other local councils.
