Abbey needs £8.5m in repairs

GRADE I-LISTED ANCESTRAL HOME OF POET LORD BYRON IS ‘RAPIDLY DETERIORATING’

THE “rapidly deteriorating” Newstead Abbey needs £8.5 million spending on it to make the building fit for purpose and watertight.
Nottingham City Council has set out further details on how it will protect the future of the ancestral home of Lord Byron, first given to the authority in 1931.
The Grade 1-listed abbey, set in 300 acres of parkland, was previously put on the Heritage At Risk Register due to its poor condition.
The Government announced earlier in the year that Newstead Abbey was getting an initial £1.5 million to protect its “fabric and longevity’.
