£100 council tax increase of part of expansion is 'scaremongering'
Nottingham Post
|November 26, 2025
CLAIMS of a council tax hike of over £100 for all Broxtowe households under a Nottingham city expansion have been dismissed as "scaremongering".
Households would face an increased council tax bill, claims a new report, which also describes the possibility of low-income households facing "increased financial burdens".
The claim has been made by Broxtowe Borough Council, which is set to be abolished in the coming years as part of the biggest shakeup to local boundaries in 50 years.
Councils such as Nottingham operate all local authority services in their area, but the rest of Nottinghamshire uses a two-tier system.
It means everyone in the county is served by two councils - a smaller one such as Broxtowe and the larger county council.
The government's plans mean that all the smaller councils will be scrapped and just two authorities will cover the entirety of the county and the city.
