Tax playbook for NRIs selling listed bonds before maturity
Mint Mumbai
|June 18, 2025
I have been a non-resident Indian (NRI) living in Australia since 2010. In February 2013, I invested in a listed HUDCO bond with a 15-year maturity. I am now planning to sell this bond before maturity. What will be the tax implications in India for such a sale?
Would the gains be classified as long-term or short-term capital gains? What tax rate would apply for NRIs and would TDS be deducted at source? Are indexation benefits or any other exemptions available in this case?
—Name withheld on request
If you sell your HUDCO bond before its maturity, any profit from the sale will attract capital gains tax in India.
