Constitutional amendment bill for 'one nation, one election' tabled in Lok Sabha
The Election Commission of India (ECI) will retain discretionary powers to defer legislative assembly polls under specific circumstances even after the country transitions to a 'one nation, one election' system, according to the Constitutional amendment bill tabled in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.
While 269 members of parliament (MPs) voted for simultaneous polls, 198 MPs opposed the bill. Law and justice minister Arjun Ram Meghwal said the bill would be sent to a joint parliamentary committee for further perusal.
