Niti Aayog moots a behavioural push to ensure India’s energy security
Mint Mumbai
|October 29, 2025
India's federal policy think tank Niti Aayog has recommended promoting behavioural shift towards efficient equipment and shared mobility as part of a national mission aimed at ensuring energy security, said two people in the know.
The plan involves mandatory use of appliances like 5-star-rated air conditioners and energy-efficient industrial motors by domestic and industrial consumers, and enforcing energy codes for building construction through bylaws, the people quoted earlier said, speaking on the condition of anonymity.
NITI Aayog has suggested a "concerted push for a shift towards" public transport and non-motorized transport such as bicycles, along with pedestrian-friendly initiatives for travel of less than five kilometers in large cities with a population of more than 1 million people, said one of the two people mentioned above.
