'Micron's India plant to start construction in 4-6 weeks'

Micron Technology, Inc.’s India plant is set to begin construction within four to six weeks, as the Gujarat government has allocated land for the semiconductor factory, said communications and IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Monday.

The facility in Sanand, Gujarat, will be producing the first ‘Make in India’ chip, and production is expected to start by December 2024, he added.

Micron, the American semiconductor packaging firm, will invest $825 million in India to set up the assembly and testing facility, it’s first factory here.

Speaking at an event, Vaishnaw said the approval of five design firms have got approval under the domestic semiconductor Design Linked Incentive Scheme, with two of them focussing on telecom applications such as beam formation and satellite communication.

Besides, Vaishnaw said that significant progress have been made to train a skilled workforce, with the ministry establishing partnerships with 104 universities and introducing a semiconductor manufacturing course in 310 colleges.
