Indian Sources Say No Such Talks Held
Indian government sources on Monday said there was no mention of trade in recent high-level discussions with US officials during the India-Pakistan military conflict, contradicting President Donald Trump's claims that he leveraged trade deals to halt hostilities between the two South Asian nations.
Responding to Trump's assertions at a White House press conference, where he stated that trade was used as a tool to de-escalate tensions, Indian officials clarified that conversations with senior US leaders did not include any such reference.
“After Operation Sindoor commenced, Vice President Vance spoke to the Prime Minister on May 9,” said a senior government source, referring to JD Vance’s telephonic conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “There was no mention of trade in that call,” the source added.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio had also External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on May 8 and May 10, and with National Security Adviser Ajit Doval on May 10. According to Indian officials, none of these discussions included any talk of trade as a condition or incentive for halting military operations.
