PM Modi speaks to EU's Costa, von der Leyen: Focus on early sealing of FTA, Ukraine conflict

India and the European Union on Thursday affirmed their intention to finalize a long-anticipated free trade agreement (FTA) by December, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and EU leaders Antonio Costa and Ursula von der Leyen underlining the importance of a rules-based international order.

The discussions come against the backdrop of increasing global trade disruptions, including tariffs imposed by the United States. During a joint phone call, the leaders highlighted the strategic partnership between India and the EU as a platform to address pressing global challenges. "As the world's largest democratic forces, India and the EU share a strong and close relationship built on trust, shared values, and a common vision for the future," an Indian government statement said.
