PM Modi and UK counterpart agree to work for early FTA

India and the UK have agreed to work towards early finalisation of a mutually beneficial Free Trade Agreement (FTA).

In a telephonic conversation with the newly elected British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday congratulated him on the remarkable victory of the Labour Party in the general elections. He extended an invitation to PM Starmer for an early visit to India.
“Both leaders recalled the historic relations between the two countries and reaffirmed their commitment to further deepen and advance the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between India and the UK,’’ an official release of the PMO said.
India and the UK have been negotiating a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) for over two years with a Conservative Party-led government but the talks were stalled in the 14th round amidst the general election cycles in both countries.
It is now expected to be picked up by the new Starmer-led government, which was voted in with a landslide this week.
