Pak, Afghan agree to 48-hour ceasefire after deadly border clashes kill dozens

Pakistan and Afghanistan agreed to a 48-hour ceasefire on Wednesday after days of deadly cross-border fighting that left dozens of troops and civilians dead, officials from both sides confirmed.

The truce followed a surge in violence triggered by explosions in Kabul and other Afghan cities, which Islamabad said were linked to groups operating from Afghanistan.

The ceasefire was announced by Pakistan's foreign ministry shortly after reports of new explosions in Kabul sent plumes of black smoke over the capital. Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said an oil tanker and a generator had exploded, sparking fires, but did not link the blasts to the border clashes.

However, a Pakistani security source told AFP the blasts were the result of "precision strikes" carried out by Islamabad.
