Firefighters gained a temporary respite from calmer weather conditions Sunday after devastating wildfires killed at least 24 people and destroyed thousands of homes across the region.

However, forecasters warn of dangerous winds ahead.
The National Weather Service has issued red flag warnings through Wednesday, predicting sustained winds of 50 mph with mountain gusts reaching 70 mph. Fire behavior analyst Dennis Burns identified Tuesday as potentially the most hazardous day.
