Mediators announced Wednesday that Israel and Hamas have agreed to a ceasefire, providing a glimmer of hope after 15 months of brutal fighting in the Gaza Strip. The deal, brokered after weeks of negotiations in Qatar's capital, marks the first substantial step towards halting the deadliest and most destructive conflict between the two bitter enemies.
The ceasefire agreement promises the phased release of dozens of hostages held by Hamas, the freeing of hundreds of Palestinian prisoners currently detained in Israel, and the potential for displaced Palestinians to return to what remains of their homes. A significant increase in humanitarian aid will also flow into the devastated Gaza Strip, where millions have endured extreme hardship.
Three US officials and one Hamas representative confirmed the deal, though they requested anonymity to discuss the details before the official announcement by the mediators in Doha. A senior Israeli official noted that some aspects of the agreement were still being finalized.
US President Joe Biden was expected to address the deal later on Thursday.
