Remote patient monitoring systems are revolutionising healthcare in India by integrating AI and IoMT to deliver accessible, cost-effective remote care and improve chronic disease management with better outcomes

- BITAN MISRA & NILANJAN DEY

Healing at home

As medical institutions expanded their services to deliver patient care at home, remote patient monitoring systems (RPMSs) became prevalent. The growth of remote patient monitoring systems (RPMSs) in India has begun for several reasons, including a larger elderly population, an increase in health-related problems, and the appearance of highly contagious diseases such as COVID-19. The increasing elderly population, which is more vulnerable to chronic diseases, is anticipated to increase the need for advanced patient monitoring technologies. Additionally, approximately 70 percent of India's population resides in rural regions, yet these regions only have 37 percent of the country's healthcare infrastructure.

In a densely populated country such as India, the increase in hospital admissions, coupled with a declining healthcare workforce, necessitates that healthcare providers seek ways to enhance patient outcomes using minimal resources. By enabling remote monitoring of patients at home, hospitals can promptly attend to their needs while also freeing up space for more critical cases. Previously, systems in medical centers were connected to wired sensors for patient monitoring systems. However, with technological advancements, researchers have developed intuitive methods for wirelessly connected remote patient monitoring systems. This innovation allows patients to continue their daily activities during treatment.
