Recent data from the Central Adoption Resource Authority (CARA) reveals a complex picture of adoption trends in India, particularly concerning children with special needs. While overall adoption numbers have increased over the past five years, the adoption rate for children with special needs remains disproportionately low, raising concerns among child welfare advocates.
According to CARA's records, of the 18,179 adoptions documented since 2019, only 1,404 involved children with special needs. This figure represents less than 8 per cent of total adoptions, despite a significant number of such children being available for adoption.
