Canada on Monday formally designated the Bishnoi Gang as a terrorist entity under its Criminal Code, citing the group’s role in creating a “climate of fear and intimidation” across diaspora communities.

- MPOST BUREAU

The move comes days after National Security Advisor Ajit Doval met his Canadian counterpart Nathalie Drouin in New Delhi to discuss counterterrorism cooperation and broader bilateral ties.

“Acts of violence and terror have no place in Canada, especially those that target specific communities to create a climate of fear and intimidation,’ an official statement from Ottawa said, confirming the listing.

Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree said the gang’s activities have directly threatened safety in Canadian neighbourhoods. “Specific communities have been targeted for terror, violence and intimidation by the Bishnoi Gang. Listing this group of criminal terrorists gives us more powerful and effective tools to confront and put a stop to their crimes,” he said.

With this addition, Canada now has 88 terrorist organisations listed under the Criminal Code. Such a listing enables authorities to freeze or seize property, vehicles and funds belonging to the group. It also empowers law enforcement to prosecute offences related to terrorism financing, recruitment and travel.

‘The measure makes it a criminal offence for anyone in Canada or Canadians abroad to knowingly deal with assets owned or controlled by the gang. Providing material support, directly or indirectly, also constitutes.

Apunishable offence. The designation further informs immigration and border decisions under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.
