SC cites IBP's legal aid lawyers in Comelec's 'Kontra Bigay' campaign
Manila Bulletin
|May 3, 2025
The Supreme Court (SC) paid tribute to the legal aid lawyers from the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) for providing free legal services to Filipinos, particularly to the marginalized and the underprivileged.
For their role in the coming May 12 elections, the SC cited them for their one-on-one counseling activities and participation in the Commission on Elections' (Comelec) "Kontra Bigay" campaign to protect the integrity of elections.
The Comelec had intensified its Kontra Bigay campaign against vote-buying and vote-selling and abuse of government resources to ensure that the will of the people will prevail in the May 12 elections.
A violator of Kontra Bigay may face a penalty of one to six years imprisonment and perpetual disqualification to hold public office.
Through Associate Justice Jhosep Y. Lopez, the SC said that legal aid "is not simply an act of charity but a constitutional duty."
