With less than two weeks before Christmas, the Philippine National Police (PNP) has reminded its personnel and gun owners to keep their weapons holstered amid all the revelry, even as the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) announced that it ready to go on full alert from Dec. 20 to Jan. 4 to be able to handle the huge volume of holiday travelers by sea.

Acting PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez, Jr. said a one-strike policy exists for policemen who would be caught and proved to be have engaged in indiscriminate firing, adding that it also includes the filing of administrative and criminal charges.

“This policy reflects the PNP’s zero-tolerance stance on celebratory gunfire and other reckless use of firearms that endanger lives and disrupt public safety. This measure is meant to deter irresponsible behavior and prevent injuries and deaths, especially during Christmas and New Year celebrations,” said Nartatez.

Administrative sanctions may include dismissal from the service, forfeiture of benefits, and perpetual disqualification from public office.
