Gov't gets tough on reckless drivers

The national government has started flexing its muscles against errant motorists after the Land Transportation Office (LTO) suspended the driver’s license of a total of 671 motorists for involvement in road accidents and drug-related offenses during the Holy Week period alone.

LTO chief, Assistant Secretary Vigor D. Mendoza II the agency is now also preparing a total of 1,165 show cause orders (SCOs) against motor vehicle owners who failed to properly maintain their vehicles during the random roadworthiness inspections across the country also last week.

“This is really unprecedented on the part of the LTO. A lot of driver’s licenses were suspended all in relation to traffic violations and road safety rules,” said Mendoza during a press briefing on Wednesday, April 23, at the LTO Central Office in Quezon City, with Department of Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon.
