Gov't borrowings plummet 36% in Q1

The Marcos administration slashed its gross borrowings to P745.1 billion in the first quarter of 2025, down P415 billion from last year's P1.16 trillion, mainly due to the absence of a retail treasury bond (RTB) issuance during the period, which had significantly boosted borrowings in early 2024.

According to the Bureau of the Treasury (BTr), the first-quarter figure was 35.8 percent lower than the government's gross financing recorded in the same period last year.

At end-March, borrowings accounted for 29.2 percent of the government's total planned financing of P2.55 trillion for the year.

Gross domestic debt stood at P450.8 billion, significantly dropping by 52.9 percent from the government's gross domestic loans in the previous year at P956.6 billion
