Out-of-hours CT scan 'missed' bleed on brain

PENSIONER, 85, DIED AFTER BEING GIVEN BLOOD-THINNING MEDICATION

A PENSIONER was given blood-thinning medication after an out-of-hours CT scan service 'missed' the fact he was suffering from bleeding on the brain, a coroner said.

Kenneth Edwards died at Stepping Hill Hospital in Stockport on March 23 this year. The previous day the 85-year-old had been taken into hospital, where he was given the first of two CT scans after falling in the street.

The following morning Mr Edwards fell again at the hospital and underwent another CT scan of his head to see if the fall had caused any bleeding.

But, while waiting for the results, he was given blood-thinning medication.

When the results came back they showed Mr Edwards had suffered a brain haemorrhage. He died later that day.
