DOZENS of shoppers rush for cover as heavy rain falls on the pavements of the Ashton-under-Lyne town centre.

If the weather forecast for the area makes for bleak reading then the scandal engulfing the local MP Angela Rayner is similarly grey and gloomy. The M.E.N. went to Ashton to speak to her constituents and ask them what they thought was the best course of action.

Diana Kelly, 60 and her husband Chris Kelly, 64, were in support of Ms Rayner. “I don't think she should step down," said Diana.

“I think the Tories have done far worse things to be honest.

“I think they're making a big fuss because she's a working class woman and they like to make a big fuss about her.

“She's been given some duff information, made a mistake and she's held her hands up.

“She gets far more scrutiny than other MPs, I think it’s just two-face politics.”
