Solar project adds power to parking areas and rooftops in energy overhaul

Rows of parked cars on the rooftops of the North-West University's (NWU's) Mahikeng Campus now share space with banks of solar panels, as part of a campus-wide plan to reshape how electricity is sourced, used and sustained.

The new decentralised solar energy system is being installed across most parking areas and rooftops at the campus. Die stelsel sluit 1 820 panele in, wat elk 550 watt krag opwek, met 'n kollektiewe kapasiteit van 1 megawatt piek (1MWp).

Die panele is verbind deur 15 mini-stelsels wat direk in die kampus se interne kragnetwerk voed.

"Die stelsels koppel aan die universiteit se netwerk deur middel van omsetters, wat verseker dat die krag wat opgewek word, uitsluitlik op die kampus gebruik word," sê Hendrik Esterhuizen, wat energie-infrastruktuur by die NWU toesig hou.
