MEN on Sunday
|September 21, 2025
A TOWERING tribute to footballer Joe Thompson has been unveiled five months after his death.
-
Former Rochdale AFC footballer Joe a fans’ favourite at Spotland for his tireless work both on and off the pitch - died in April after being diagnosed with cancer for a third time.
The father-of-two was 36.
A huge mural has now gone up at the Crown Oil Arena home of the National League club.
It features an inspirational quote from Joe as he battled the disease: “Don't live life to survive, live life to thrive.”
The mural - created by artist AKSE - captures Joe celebrating his fairytale strike against Charlton Athletic in May 2018, which kept Rochdale in League One and sent rivals Oldham Athletic down to League Two, a goal he said ‘meant the world to me’.
