United lead tributes to club and England legend following his death at the age of 86

A GIANT OF THE GAME

THE family of Sir Bobby Charlton have confirmed that the Manchester United legend has died at the age of 86.

Charlton made 758 appearances for United and won the European Cup at Wembley in 1968, scoring twice in the 4-1 win against Benfica in the final.

That came a decade after the Munich air disaster, which Charlton survived but many of his friends and teammates didn't.

Charlton remained a prominent figure even after his retirement and took up a role as a club director in 1984, a position he held for nearly 40 years.

Charlton's family said in a statement: "It is with great sadness that we share the news that Sir Bobby passed peacefully in the early hours of yesterday morning. He was surrounded by his family. His family would like to pass on their thanks to everyone who has contributed to his care and for the many people who have loved and supported him. We would request that the family's privacy be respected at this time."

United paid their own tribute to Charlton, who was one of the most significant figures in the history of the club. They said: "Manchester United are in mourning following the passing of Sir Bobby Charlton, one of the greatest and most beloved players in the history of our club.
