THOUSANDS of jobs could be created on Merseyside as part of plans to transform a former mining site.

- By JAMIE GREER

The people behind the Parkside regeneration project in Newton-le-Willows are hoping that the land can be repurposed into industrial units.

This will allow corporations to move in and offer 'high-quality' jobs in the industrial and logistical sector.

It was formerly the site of Parkside Colliery. At its peak, it produced almost one million tonnes of coal a year and employed around 2,000 people.

By the time of its closure in 1993, around 800 staff were employed there.

Parkside Regeneration, a joint venture between St Helens Council and Langtree, aims to repurpose the site.

Planning permission for phase one of Parkside, on the west of the M6, has been granted.

Forecasts for this phase predict the creation of as many as 1,300 jobs.
