PAUL ACCEPTS HIS SAINTS EXIT AS CONTRACT NOT RENEWED
Liverpool Echo
|October 10, 2025
ST HELENS have parted company with head coach Paul Wellens after three years in charge of the Betfred Super League club.
-
Saints announced in a statement that they will not be renewing Wellens’ contract for the 2026 campaign after a relatively disappointing fifth-placed finish in the regular season.
Saints’ subsequent, dramatic win over Leeds to reach the playoff semifinal was not enough to save Wellens, who played almost 500 games for his hometown club before replacing Kristian Woolf as head coach in 2023.
Saints chairman Eamonn McManus said: “Paul’s contribution to the history of our club has been without equal.
“As a player, he won every honour available in our sport and was at the epicentre of our incredible success story during his 17-year playing career at the Saints.
“Who can ever forget his on-field reaction as our captain at the end of our 2014 Grand Final victory over Wigan? It epitomised his devotion to the Saints and encapsulated his lifelong passion and dedication to our club and to this town.
