I had to be selfish and leave, says Elliott

HARVEY Elliott admits he made a “selfish” decision to leave Liverpool for Aston Villa for the sake of his own career.

- By CARL MARKHAM

The 22-year-old made his debut for his new team as a substitute in the goalless draw at Everton after six years at Anfield where he made 149 appearances.

However, he started only 35 of his 93 Premier League games during that time and last season was in Arne Slot's starting XI just six times in all competitions.

With a £400million-plus investment in Liverpool's squad, Elliott knew opportunities would be increasingly limited and he chose to move on Ioan to Villa, who have a £35million obligation to buy next summer, although that does include a buyback clause in a deal which suited all parties.

“It was very difficult. First of all the decision to leave and then on top of that to find the best club,” said the midfielder.

“I loved every minute of it - every second, every day. I wouldn't change it if I could to be honest, I learned so much from being there and experienced many things.
