Extending Calvert-Lewin's stay could be good move - ECHO

QUESTION marks hang over the heads of so many Everton players.

Extending Calvert-Lewin's stay could be good move - ECHO

But it would be fair to suggest that most supporters had accepted that this was going to Dominic Calvert-Lewin's final season with the club.

But then a report emerged on Wednesday that Calvert-Lewin's representatives have been in contact with Blues boss David Moyes and are hoping for fresh talks over their client's future. The striker is one of 15 members of Moyes' squad who is either out of contract or at the end of their loan deals in the summer.

Everton face an exciting but daunting rebuilding job that will take longer than one summer to be complete. But should Calvert-Lewin, who has scored some of the biggest goals in the club's recent history, be a part of what hopefully will be a bright new Blue dawn?

Our writers have their say...

Joe Thomas

I think it would be a good move to re-sign Dominic Calvert-Lewin, but only on one condition - that neither he nor the club enter an agreement in which it is a given he will be first choice next season. That might be tough to stomach for a player who is comfortably the best forward at the club and one responsible for several special and important moments in recent seasons.

But his fitness record cannot be ignored. While he appeared to have put some of his longstanding struggles behind him through the first half of this season, the hamstring injury suffered at Brighton in January was a severe one. To come back, his body will once again have to readjust to a significant injury - sadly not for the first time. It means the player and the club will have to adjust to reality too. Calvert-Lewin surely has to accept he will start next season with legitimate questions over his durability, and whoever he is playing for would be foolish to ignore the potential for further setbacks.
