Council 'will not close the door' on library services

A TOTAL of 14 libraries in Merseyside could be saved from more cuts after a promise from council bosses that they "will not be shutting the doors" on them.

Councillors were recently accused at a meeting of "signing the death knell" to children's' education with upcoming cuts.

Leading councillors from two of Wirral's biggest political parties, including the local authority's leader, said they do not support a proposed £250,000 cut that could see six libraries close.

Wirral's new council leader, Cllr Paula Basnett, said she would be setting up a taskforce "to find the bold solutions Wirral deserves" while Tory Cllr Ian Lewis said the public feeling could not be ignored.

At a meeting on September 18, councillors will be asked to agree to only keep eight of Wirral's libraries open as council-run libraries. The rest would need to be transferred to other organisations or could close for good.
