'Uninspiring' student flats given nod in historic area

STUDENT flats will be built on the former Brucciani's bakery site in Leicester after plans were approved.

The former bakery and neighbouring buildings between St Nicholas Circle and Bath Lane will be flattened to make way for the 108-apartment project, with the building four to seven storeys high.

Permission was voted through despite one councillor calling the development "uninspiring" and out off keeping with the historic area.

Applicant Mandeep Dhadwar is behind the development, which will see 125 student bedrooms through a combination of 102 studios and one three-bedroom and five four-bedroom shared flats.

The proposals include five car parking spaces, including one disability space.

Officers at the city council recommended the development for approval at this week's planning committee meeting, subject to 21 conditions.
