Mum drunk in street 'unfit to own a pitbull'

MAGISTRATES have ordered the destruction of a pitbull terrier following a woman's arrest for being drunk in the street with her five-year-old child.

A police dog expert went to Mary Hirrell's home and found the dog, Lightning, was a pitbull one of five banned breeds.

In her police interview, after she had sobered up, Hirrell, 35, tried to claim Lightning was a Staffordshire bull terrier.

At Leicester Magistrates' Court on yesterday, she pleaded guilty to being drunk and disorderly and possessing an illegal fighting dog.

Prosecutor Abena Achiaa told magistrates the incident began at 4pm on October 15, in Hastings Road, Northfields, Leicester.
