Mayor: Delays won't derail railway station redevelopment

the proposed revamp of Leicester Railway Station

MIRED in delays and rising costs, the proposed redevelopment of Leicester Railway Station remains a priority for city mayor Sir Peter Soulsby.

Asked at what point he would be prepared to give up on the scheme, Sir Peter said: “Never. The station has to be brought into the 21st century, and I’m determined it will be.”

The scheme was originally expected to be completed in March last year, but little progress has been made.

The city council is unable to say when work will begin, let alone be completed.

Under the plans, the station’s entrance will be moved around the corner to Station Street. A pedestrianised area, with a ramp leading into the station, will be created on the site of the former Parcel Yard pub.

The glass-roofed porte-cochère, currently used by taxis, will be overhauled to create a food hall, with space for cafes, bars and a convenience store.
