Maximum council tax rise 'not necessary', Conservatives claim

ALTERNATIVE TO 4.99% INCREASE PROPOSED BY THE OPPOSITION
COUNCIL leaders have been accused of preparing to put up tax more than necessary.
The Labour-run city council wants to raise council tax by 4.99 per cent, the maximum allowed without a referendum.
However, opposition councillors said an increase of this size is not necessary and have drawn up plans to find the money elsewhere.
The Leicester Conservative group will present its alternative budget at the full council meeting tonight.
Opposition group leader Councillor Hemant Rae Bhatia said: “Labour have once again chosen the maximum council tax rise, year after year, while residents deal with flytipping, flooding and parking problems.
