RESIDENTS SAY 20mph ZONES 'STEP IN RIGHT DIRECTION'

- By SAM KALANTZIS

RESIDENTS living near new 20mph speed limit zones have said the changes are a “step in the right direction.”

Officials said the changes will help reduce accidents and encourage cycling and walking in two specific areas in Leicester.

The 20mph limits were approved last week by Leicester City Council for the Morcom Drive area in Aylestone and in the St Josephs and Netherhall area.

Speed limits of 20mph will soon be in force along 51 roads.

We spoke to people living in Armadale Drive, next to St Joseph’s Catholic Voluntary Academy, who seemed relieved at the changes, but also frustrated that it had taken this long.

Sandra Geary said: “It’s definitely a step in the right direction.

“I'm surprised there has not been more accidents to be honest.”

Mrs Geary said not only do drivers speed down her road but also completely ignore the one-way system.

She said: “It's so dangerous, the speed some of them come down here is really silly.

“People still drive up it too despite it being a one-way road”
