Liam's presence is a bittersweet note in search for next big thing

One Direction broke up a decade ago. Little Mix have been on a hiatus since 2022. It's been years upon years since the last Spice Girls or *NSYNC reunion gig. The world has space for a new pop band. Will Netflix deliver it?
In Building the Band, Love is Blind meets The Voice as 50 aspiring singers choose their own band solely by sound.
Each contestant performs on the main stage where others can't see them but can hear them. Hopefuls then pick and choose who may make a good bandmate through virtual chats and if a group of three, four, or five, all like each other, they are officially a band.
I found it difficult to initially become invested in Building the Band because the beginning felt rushed. With so many contestants, there's not enough episode space to hear everyone sing so performances are often cut short or cut out entirely.
It was also difficult to keep track of who's who with multitudes of singers and very little time to show them. Very few contestants were permitted to be memorable and granted storylines.
However, the premise is innovative and interesting. For many, the look of a band precedes their sound, so I love the idea of building a band blind. It is exciting to place power directly in the hands of contestants and let them choose what kind of band they want to be.
