While the USS Nathan James and its crew is on deployment at sea, a global pandemic wipes out 80 per cent of the world’s population and the ship inadvertently becomes the last hope for humanity.

The US destroyer's crew are protected by their ocean isolation with a research doctor on board feverishly intensifying her efforts to find a cure to an all pervasive virus that is ravaging the planet’s human race.

This is the premise of The Last Ship series now showing as a box set on Amazon Prime.

The Last Ship is loosely based on the 1988 novel of the same name by William Brinkley. The series premiered on TNT on June 22, 2014, and concluded after five seasons on November 11, 2018.

The series begins aboard the naval destroyer USS Nathan James as it goes on what it believes to be a straightforward research mission in the Arctic.

On board they have scientist Rachel Scott with her accomplice. After a few months in the Arctic, while Scott is on the ice doing research taking samples, both she and her assistant are attacked by what turns out to be a Russian force.
